Anyone that knows me knows I love watching and discussing movies (as do many of my friends). Today I’m going to do something different and post about the films I’ve seen since starting my trip. I’ve watched movies on buses, planes, my laptop, and DVDs. I also like lists, and for a while have been in the habit of recording every movie I see in order to keep track of them.
Here’s the list of films I’ve seen since I left Canberra two Sundays ago (including what I rate them out of 5 stars):
Some of these I had already seen: I went to the cinemas three times for Inglourious Basterds. The world war 2 Tarantino flick is my favourite movie of the year, and I downloaded it with Swedish subtitles to show Doug and his brother. Due to the film’s setting (Nazi-occupied France) most of the dialog is in German and French, but because I had seen it several times I could follow it easily without the English subs.
Now for a couple of bad movies: Meet Dave and Night at the Museum 2. They both really sucked, though Night at the Museum was particularly bad. The first one had (though not much) some charm and mystery; this one had neither. It was so boring I could barely stay awake for the two hours. This movie made $400 million USD worldwide.
The Dirty Dozen is a film I have always wanted to see, and I got the chance to on my flight from Abu Dhabi. It’s a great movie from the 60s, about a bunch of American soldiers taken from prison and sent on a suicide mission behind enemy lines in WW2. Great acting, great story. I would recommend it to anyone.
The first film I watched in Sweden was the French film Irréversible (recommended by Doug). While it is a very good movie, it is also very disturbing, and actually made me feel sick in a couple of parts. Never watch this movie with your girlfriend if you intend on getting any after; it has a 9 minute long rape scene that is the worst thing I have ever seen in a film. Monica Bellucci is a beautiful woman and a good actor, and it was really terrible to watch and listen to her in that scene. It’s hard for me to recommend this film, but it really is worth watching.
Finally, let me just say: Highlander. What a movie! It has everything: sword fights, immortal warriors, the Scottish highlands, boobs, and Sean Connery playing an Egyptian. And the soundtrack was composed by Queen. Could it be the greatest film of all time?
Well, this was fun. Now I’m off to continue my Swedish lessons. Hej då!
NOTE: I stole the movie stars from my friend’s website, The Film Brief (I hope he doesn’t mind). Check it out if you’re also a movie fan.

Those stars do look familiar… But don’t worry, I’m pretty sure I knicked them from some site, too.
Two stars for “A History of Violence”? I’m going to go ahead and blame that on the jet-lag…

Hmm, I never knew anything about this movie and just looked it up and saw it’s critically acclaimed. I don’t know, all the acting was terrible (especially the son), the motivations of the characters unrealistic, and it didn’t really lead anywhere. He just kills some guys. It reminded me of Unforgiven, except that movie is good. I guess I’m going to have to go against the majority here.
